A few of my neighbors employ a chemical mosquito spray franchise during early spring. I thought everyone knows early spring is devoid of mosquitoes, they don't arrive until summer. This existential fear of mosquitoes is so puzzling. Are all outdoor flying or crawling insects to be feared and killed - is there no distinguishing between living indoors and living outdoors? Does mosquito spraying harm the environment, people, pets or pollinators? The blog, Effects of mosquito sprays on humans, pets, and wildlife, pulls the curtain back as to the lethal chemical ingredient used by the growing mosquito spraying business - pyrethroids. High doses of pyrethroids are toxic to the environment and their killing effects are not limited to mosquitoes.
There are at least two schools of thought, 1) employing others to kill all adult flying insects, or 2) addressing the root cause - mosquito larvae. I use a biological mosquito control where mosquitoes could lay eggs, like our outdoor bubbler fountain.
